swan riot somatics FAQs
No prior experience is needed; you will be guided through somatic processes and have them modelled for you.
We don't necessarily use somatics straight away or in every session. We need to establish a safe and trusted alliance and slowly build your inner awareness. The initial sessions focus on getting to know you and your issues before going deeper. At the same time, if you have prior somatic experience, we can go there earlier.
SE regards the whole body as including the mind. It's not that we won't be talking whilst you're engaged in a somatic process. However, you're invited to describe, track and follow what you notice as we interact with your experience. The body tends to like sensate language (humming, jittery, buzzy), especially when we meet parts of your inner experience that are hard to put into everyday language. People also use metaphors, images, colours, temperatures, symbols, and made-up words to describe their experiences, which can make the process playful and creative.
No. I use other modalities as listed on the website. If you prefer a mostly reflective space, so talking through your issues, we can take that approach.
Sessions run for 60 mins and combine talking and gently bringing awareness to your body. We might notice sensations, emotions, or subtle shifts as they arise, and explore them at a pace that feels manageable for you. There’s no set formula; each session is guided by what you’re experiencing in the moment, with care taken not to overwhelm your system.
No. You’re always welcome to speak, reflect, and move at your own pace. Somatic work isn’t about forcing you into your body; it’s about gradually building a relationship with it. We follow what feels accessible, and you won’t be pushed into anything that doesn’t feel right.
That’s completely okay, and very common. Somatics sees disconnection as a valid response to trauma or overwhelm. Disconnection is something we work with, not something you need to fix before starting. We begin wherever you are, whether that’s numbness, overwhelm, or uncertainty, and gently build awareness over time
The work is intentionally paced to support your nervous system. We move slowly, with attention to safety, consent, and what feels manageable. If something feels too much, we pause, adjust, or shift direction. You’re not expected to push through or relive anything.
While there is space to talk, this approach also includes your body as part of the process. Rather than only understanding your experiences cognitively, we begin to notice how they are held physically and emotionally. This can support shifts that don’t always happen through talking alone.
You can bring anything - current challenges, relationship patterns, feelings you don’t fully understand, or a general sense that something isn’t quite right. There’s no need to have it clearly defined. We can take time to understand what’s present together.
You’re welcome to reach out for a free 30-minute Zoom consultation. This is a chance to connect, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels like a good fit, and there's no pressure to continue. Send a request for a 30-minute Zoom call via the Contact Form.
